Not Your Typical Quilter
The look of surprise on all the faces when they find out I'm a quilter is priceless. It's often followed with "I never would have guessed that you quilt!" It always leads to a conversation that involves the picture that has been painted in one's head of what a quilter should look like or should be. You know, an old lady with curlers in her hair. Now don't get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But it leads me to wonder, what is it that makes a quilter?
Surely a quilter can't be boxed into such a narrow category. After all, there is so much more to me than just quilting. I'm a mother, a daughter, a wife, a sister, an athlete, a leader, a nurse, and the list goes on and on. Just as all people do not look the same, not all quilters look the same. Nor do we all have the same interests and skills.
We are a people that enjoy creating. We pour our blood (you know, when the rotary cutter slips), sweat, and tears (from all the times you've had to use your seam ripper) into that creation. Often times it's a thankless task. Too few know the time, planning, and skill that goes into it. Yet we continue.
Perhaps instead of putting quilters into a tiny box we can look at the qualities of a quilter .I cannot speak for all, but I do have certain qualities that translate to quilting:
I have a lot of love to give, even if it doesn't show on the outside.
More often than not, I'm called a perfectionist (although quilting has taught me that perfection is not always attainable).
I'm a busy body, unable to just sit, I always find the need to occupy my hands and feet.
I am goal-oriented, always having a plan.
I am often quiet,a little strange, and do my own thing.
I always see everything to the end. It may take me 2 years, but I will finish what I started.
I am creative (and proof positive than ANYONE can find their creative side)
I may not look like the typical quilter, but am told I have the spirit of one. And that is perfectly fine with me. What about you? What qualities do you have that translate into the quilting world?
